Intellectual Freedom Challenge Contest
Once again, NEHS offers the Intellectual Freedom Challenge competition exclusively for junior and sophomore members of active NEHS chapters. The Intellectual Freedom Challenge invites NEHS members to submit well-reasoned, argumentative essays about the use of controversial texts that have been or may be challenged due to theme, content, or language. Essays will be accepted through October 7, 2019.
NCTE Position Statement on "Red-Flagging" Books
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has recently updated a position statement concerning censoring practices prevalent in many school districts. The information artfully delineates NCTE's assertions "that students' and teachers' unimpeded access to quality literature has to be assured."
Classroom Library Grants for Early Career Teachers
For the 2019-2020 school year, NEHS will be offering its own Classroom Library Grant to accommodate the needs of more early career English teachers. These awards, up to $400 each, give new English teachers funds to begin building their own classroom libraries. Grant applications may be submitted through October 7, 2019.
New Poetry Challenge
New for 2019-2020, NEHS will be inviting both student members and Advisors of active NEHS chapters to submit poetry for the "Poetry Challenge." Each month, starting in October, poets may submit original poetry based on themes that have been established by the Advisory Council. Details about submission guidelines and processes will be available soon. October's theme will be "Beginnings and Endings."
Survey Being Sent to All Lead Advisors
A survey was sent yesterday to all Lead Chapter Advisors via a separate email, requesting responses to a few questions about establishing an Advisor Forum as well as asking for all Advisors to
  1. make sure NEHS Connect information is up to date, and
  2. asking that principal names and email addresses be added to NEHS Connect to enhance communication.
Please complete the survey at your earliest convenience. Thank you!
